Big Download: “Anyone could come up with a lot of reasons for why Valve is such a successful company. Ask any two people what makes Valve so successful and they’ll probably point to different things. Some will say their cabal style game design and free content updates. While others will point to the Steam platform, mod support and integration of top mod designers. Some may even call out Gabe Newell himself. Oh and don’t forget Doug Lombardi, either. We could go on and on about just what made (and continues to make) Valve so very special. Though I doubt it’s any single one of those things as opposed to many of them at the right moments in the right way. Or in other words, a lot of chance, determination and some vision.
What I do think can be gleaned from the success of Valve, is where PC gaming will — or at least should be — going over the next few years. Hit the image above to take a look at what I think their model of game design and business decisions has to offer the wider PC gaming market.”

PSP Fanboy: “PSP news is sounding rather bleak lately — but why should it stay this way? Hey Sony, here’s five things we think you can do to make the system better for you and better for us. With these steps, we think you’ll reduce piracy, increase the amount of games and features we want, and make PSP a better, more lovable place for developers. Best of all: none of these features require a hardware reboot. Imagine, a world where PSPs of all creeds, from 1000 to 3000 can access the same benefits. We believe it can happen.”

MTV’s Stephen Totilo writes:
“Viewers of CBS’ Early Show yesterday were treated to a sight arguably more extraordinary than swimmer Michael Phelps’ procurement of eight gold medals at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
To win eight gold medals, a man merely has to swim faster than any other man in the world. That’s easy compared to what appeared to happen on the Early Show, when the producers appeared to bend the laws of space and time as they presented Phelps a copy of “Call of Duty: World At War” for the PS3 - a game that won’t be released for at least another month or two, if not further into the future than that. The CBS host assured Phelps that Activision wanted Phelps to have the game first.
I asked an Activision PR rep yesterday how this happened…”

AnalogHype: You heard of True Hollywood Stories, well this is the gaming version of that. Matterfact this concept did not even get born until the end of this interview, you can witness it happen. Why focus on how Paris Hilton rose to fame when you can focus on the gaming o.g.’s speak on there journey in this games industry. I start with Torrence Davis, owner and managing editor of TheBitbag.com. It’s alot more to Torrence than what you may think, take a listen and learn. Hear this mans journey and even some regrets.

Yahoo writes: “Around four million Chinese youngsters are addicted to the Internet, mainly attracted by “unhealthy” online games, state media reported Friday, citing a top legislator.
“Internet-addicted teenagers” account for around 10 percent of China’s Web users under the age of 18, the Beijing Times said, quoting Li Jianguo, a vice chairman of the standing committee of the National People’s Congress, or parliament.
The committee has called for stricter monitoring of Internet games that have illegal or inappropriate content, the report said.”

Pwnamon.co.uk writes "Everyone knows the NES. It’s the system that saved the Video Game Industry when Atari screwed things up. It’s the system that began the modern gaming era. It’s the Grandfather of all gaming consoles. You know, blah blah blah. Anyway, it’s no secret that it had some great games. It’s going to be very difficult, but I’m going to pick the 10 NES games that were the best ones on the system."

Thomcult: Everyone who has their hand in the production of a title obviously has a right to be credited for their work. The deliberate exclusion of those whom have since left a production team, or inclusion of senior management who have played no real role could quite easily be argued as one of the industry’s shadier practices and something, for the sake of its integrity, that should be put to a stop.
Trouble arises though when trying to reconcile the duty a company has to its employees and its positioning strategy. There has been a lot of debate in the industry surrounding the emergence of a class of “superstar developers” and whether it is (or they are) beneficial for the industry.

Previous hardware evolutions saw consoles get bigger, more expensive and more technically advanced. Nintendo took a different model with the Wii, as of July, it finds itself in the top spot. The result? As experts look for “what’s next?” they should really be looking at “what’s here” — because the next generation of consoles will either be more delayed than expected or show virtually no innovation.
